St George's Day's Drive-Out Celebration

Every spring around St. George's Day (30th April), before the grazing starts on the Hortobágy Puszta (barren), there is an event to celebrate the beginning of the new grazing season. National Herdsmen's Competition

Driving and managing a herd is not an easy task. It requires a wide range of skills from the herdsmen. On this day all those herdsmen of Hungary who are working with Grey Cattle are invited to participate on a competition to challenge each other and their knowledge, skills in animal keeping and breeding. Hungarian Grey Cattle Fair

The 3-year-old bulls introduction and sale takes place at Hortobágy and Apajpuszta every autumn. In principle, every breeder can assign bulls for breeding but then they are raised and introduced either by Dezső Szomor (in Apajpuszta) or by the Hortobagyi Nonprofit Ltd. (in Hortobágy). Herdsmen's Advent - Driving-in Celebration

Herds - together with their attending herdsmen’s - are out grazing the puszta until they bring snow home on their backs. They are driven to their wintering grounds when herdsmen have to give an account on their stocks. More details »
