Hungarian Grey Cattle Fair

Sires play a major role in the life and survival of domestic breeds. Due to the extensive keeping of the Grey Cattle, new sires are chosen from the 3-year-old bull stock every year. At least 15 bulls are to be raised each year, and they must be kept on the fields during the grazing season.

The 3-year-old bulls introduction and sale takes place at Hortobágy and Apajpuszta every autumn. In principle, every breeder can assign bulls for breeding but then they are raised and introduced either by the Hortobagyi Non-profit Company.

Our company’s role in Grey Cattle preservation significantly grew when it undertook the raising of sires. It must be emphasized that sire breeding is performed on a very high level. The bulls are judged by professionals who consider the national interest based on the opinion of the Grey Cattle Breeders Association and the National Institute for Agricultural Quality Control (OMMI). Professional breeding can harmonize the tough and natural raising conditions that is a necessity for the breed’s survival with adequate growth and development with better results year by year.
