St George’s Day’s “Driving-Out” Celebration
Every spring around St. George’s Day (30th April), before the grazing starts on the Hortobágy Puszta (barren), there is an event to celebrate the beginning of the new grazing season. This day can give an excellent opportunity to visitors to gain knowledge about traditions and customs of the people of Hortobágy.
On this day, Hungarian grey cattle herds are driven through on the famous Nine Hole Bridge of Hortobágy. Herdmen dance traditional dances in their traditional wear.
Visitors are welcome to taste the special local “puszta” dishes, which are cooked by our herdmen or by the Baking Masters of Hortobágy.
An open organic market, where you can find most products of the Ecoregion of Hortobágy, is hold on the bank of the Hortobágy River.
