The first Hungarian national park, part
of the world heritage lies on more than 80 000 hectares. Its pastures are grazed by
almost 9000 cattle, 50 000 sheep, 400 horses and 200 water buffalos. Despite the
environment teeming with the seduction of other ways and means of making a living,
more than 200 pásztors herd animals here.
The Hortobagy Non-profit Company for Nature Conservation and Gene Preservation
conducts nature preservation tasks on one-fifth (17 000 hectares) of the National
Park area, while also fulfilling the requirements of organic farming. Thus, Hungary's
and Europe's largest joint and fully converted organic farming area formed.
The Hortobágyi Kht multipled the population of traditional Hungarian farm animals
in the puszta (Hungarian Grey Cattle, Nonius horse, Racka sheep, Mangalica pig and
water buffalo), while preserved the amazing beauty of this unique landscape, the clean
waters, air and the natural values. Thanks to these stock improvements more than half
of the gene bank livestock population of Hungarian nature protection can be found here.
The company is proud of its almost sixty herdmen. Animal raising knowledge, traditional
clothing and cooking skills of horsemen, herdmen, shepherds and swineherds becomes public
treasure at the Herdmen's Competition, the Equestrian Days and the Grey Cattle Bull
Autumn Fair.
Our company, as a model farm, helps the farmers of the region to acquire knowledge
of animal husbandry and organic farming. The company, as an integrator, enabled the
establishment of several Grey Cattle breeding farms.
The children of the region can get close to the Hortobágy and its traditional farm
animals through the Puszta Animal Park and the Hungarian Grey Cattle Historical Exhibition.
Returning back to their homes in the evenings they can recollect with excitement the
mysterious names of the pasztors? world: the pusztas, drives, marshes and reeds. Here
they can put their scrip on their shoulders filled with tales about animals, clothing,
meals, objects, wells and mirages (fata morgana). Grown up they can be homecoming
visitors of the puszta.
Welcome visitors to our homepage. We hope this website will encourage you to come
and experience the wonderful world of the Hortobágy.
